#5120 CARBON FOOTPRINT OF IN-CENTER HEMODIALYSIS: RESULTS OF A FRENCH PILOT STUDY

Abstract Background and Aims Since the beginning of industrial era, human activities have led to a significant increase in concentration greenhouse gases (GHGs) atmosphere are cause climate change, negative effects which on health already visible (1). Paradoxically, sector also exerts major pressure environment through carbon-based care that emit GHGs (2). In this context, few studies highlighted carbon footprint associated with hemodialysis (3). However, date, no similar study has been conducted France. Method The objective work was evaluate unit France using Bilan Carbone ® approach developed by French Agency for Ecological Transition Association. Activity data provision at Charles De Gaulle facility 2021 collected converted common measurement tonnes CO2 equivalents (t CO2-eq) via established emissions factors. Results Over year 2021, de provided 25270 treatments ensuring approximately 162 patients (at rate 3 sessions per week). annual 1436 t CO2-eq. Annual amounted 8.9 CO2-eq/patient/year corresponding 57 kg CO2-eq /treatment. Emissions were essentially indirect, more than 90% coming from scope 3. main sources were: products services purchase (30% emissions, 437 CO2-eq), staff travels (25% 361 fixed assets (21% 299 CO2-eq). Energy consumption (particularly electricity) waste treatment accounted small proportion GHG (respectively 8% et 6%). Conclusion Our results confirm high in-center hemodialysis, showing it mainly attributable indirect emissions. These empirical will serve as basis reflection development strategy reduce hemodialysis. hopefully be paving way necessary ecological transition medical practices, focused patient ecosystems he/she depends.
